I came across this software a couple of days ago and thought that this could be a great help to solve our Spam problem.  The problem I am facing is the vagueness of the documentation for the installation/setup of the software, and OS/machine specs requirement.  The software seems easy enough to figure out, but when I try to start up the service, got an error# 10049 trying to assign the IP address.   Is there a step by step on how to set this up?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

vinh,

If you can post a bit more details on the error w'll be glad to help. Usually the most common problem assigning the IP address is is that SpamFilter is configured to listen on an IP that is already being used by another application (usually SMTP servers or anti-virus). To check if this is the case, close SpamFilter, then from a DOS command prompt type:

telnet aa.bb.cc.dd 25

where aa.bb.cc.dd is the IP you'd like SpamFilter to use. If you do not receive an error and the telnet connection is established, then it shows that another application is using port 25 on that IP address. You'll have to either use a different IP/port combinaiton for SpamFilter, or you'll need to reconfigre the other application to use a different IP/port.

The busiest server we've seen SpamFilter on is a server that handles about 1 million emails/day, with about 100-300 concurrent incoming connections at any given second. With that load, the SpamFilter process was using on average 30% processor time, and had a memory footprint of about 30-60MB of RAM.

As a comparison, our own production server is an old P400 with 128MB of RAM, SpamFilter on it handles in total comfort about 15,000 emails/day using about 20-30MB of RAM.

Roberto,
Thanks for the reply. Here is what I tried to do.
Lets just assume that our pulbic address for our mail
server is 10.10.10.20 and NAT to 192.168.10(exchange
server 5.5). I configured our mail server to listen
on port 26 as suggested by users on the forum. The
SpamFilter software is installed on W2K server machine
with the IP address 192.168.1.20. Under the
configuration tab on the SpamFilter software is the
following.

SMTP listener socket: IP(s)= 192.168.1.10 Port = 25 FQDN = mail.mydomain.com

Destination server: Name = 192.168.1.10 Port = 26

I got errors with the above configuration, the next step would be to assign the SpamFilter machine with the IP address 192.168.1.10 and reassign our exchange server to 192.168.1.20 and listen on port 25(again). With the following configuration:

SMTP listener socket: IP(s)= 192.168.1.10 Port = 25 FQDN = mail.mydomain.com

Destination server: Name = 192.168.1.20 Port = 25

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Vinh,

Have you tried, while SpamFilter is not running, telnetting to port 25 on 192.168.1.10:

telnet 192.168.1.10 25

if you did, and connected successfully, it means you have another service (possibly exchange) using up that IP:port combination, so SpamFilter cannot use it. If the connection is not successful, can you please post the exact error you are receiving from SpamFilter?

Thanks Roberto,

I got it to work now.  Yes, it was an IP issue.  Now we have a bunch of rejected e-mails due to the DNS reverse lookup option.  I unchecked and saved the settings but continues to do it.  How do I configure SpamFilter to let everything through and acts just as a mail relay?  As we get more comfortable with the software, we will begin to add our own rules.  Much thanks.

The simplest thing to allow all mail would be to uncheck all boxes in the configuration tab, remove all entries from the "MAPS servers" tab in the Black/White lists, and remember to add all your local domains in the "Local Domains" tab.

Hello Roberto, we are in the process of buying your Spam filter software.  I think it's a great product, but I am a little concern of its stability.  I had the Spam filter service unload on me for no apparent reason 3-4 times in 3 weeks, however the OS is fine.  FYI, I am using the beta version.  The free/trial unloads all the time, again the OS is fine.  At the bottom is the error that I receive in the event viewer when the service unloads.   Have you ever encounter this problem?  Thanks.

Vinh,

The beta version is unstable. There are several problems with it that are being investigated. We'll be releasing a new beta within a few days that will should have fixed several of them, however it will still be a beta and thus unreliable.

The free build 1.2.0.178 also has some bugs that cause it to crash under specific circumstances. Those have been fixed in the current official build 1.2.0.206. If you can email us at mailto:support@logsat.com" CLASS="ASPForums" TITLE="WARNING: URL created by poster. - support@logsat.com we can try to help you with the problems in the free version.
