I'm replacing our mail server shortly and am hoping that SPamfilter will queue email while the server is migrated.

How long will spamfilter queue mail before ditching it?

Can  anyone think of any problems with this plan?

........and is there a way to retry the queue, or do I just have to wait?

MikeTree,

There is a setting in the SpamFilter.INI File:
ExpireRetryQueueHours=24
This sets how long the queue retries before dumping messages.

Also, there is a "Flush Now" button in the GUI and a setting for how often it retries by itself.

MikeTree,

As Dan "The Desperado" mentioned, there is a setting in the ini file, ExpireRetryQueueHours, that controls how long SpamFilter will queue emails. The default value for that setting should be 0 (zero), meaning that SpamFilter will hold email indefinetly until your SMTP server is back online. The "Flush Now" button will cause SpamFilter to attempt delivery immediately, without having to wait for the next queue retry period.

MikeTree,

One warning that I will give you is that SpamFilter does an excelent job of flushing it's Queue ... meaning that if you have thousands of messages, it will hammer your destination server.  The good news is that if your destination server starts refusing connections, SpamFilter will simply re-queue and then try again.

MikeTree, Dan,

As an FYI, this is not mentioned in the documentation, but when SpamFilter flushes its queue to deliver all queued messages to your SMTP server, it will use 1/2 the number of the value "Max Inbound Connection" to limit the concurrent threads connecting to your SMTP server. You can temporarily lower that number if you are worried about "swamping" your SMTP server.

Roberto,

Excelent piece of information!  I was always wondering what was limiting my queue flush when I had THOUSANDS of messages in the queue due to a customer server failure.  This gives me yet another way to semi-throttle my outbound flushes on my backup server!

Can I just remove the destination server details while I migrate the mailboxes across , then put in the details of the new server, or will it keep trying to send to the original server?

In case of Queue Autodelete turned on, the sender of deleted message will receive a failure notification or not?

By default SpamFilter will retry the delivery for ever until the SMTP server comes back online. If the interval is modified/reduced, emails will be deleted but no non-delivery email will be sent.
