Hi,

I've just installed Spam Filter and have a couple of questions about finishing of the installation.

I have Spam Filter and my Mail Server on to seperate machines.

Firstly, does the mail server still need an MX record or can that be deleted?

And probably a dumb question but also, my Mail Server allows me to limit the ip addresses that connect to it, should I limit these to the addresses that I have Spam Filter 'running' on?

Wodge,

The short answer is that your MX record should point ONLY to the SpamFilter listening IP and NOT the destination server.  Also, I, personally, feel it is a real good idea to limit the connections on the destination server to only the IP that SpamFilter sends on.

    I just downloaded and installed the trial version and can not seem to get it to bind to port 25. I am running this on the same machine as my SMTP server. Any suggestions?

If you're receiving a "could not bind socket" error message, this indicates that SpamFilter is not able to listen on the IP / port assigned to it since they are already taken by another application. By default SpamFilter will listen on port 25 on all IPs assigned to the server. If there is already another application on the server using port 25 SpamFilter will not able to use that port.
 
One way to find out what application is using port 25 is to issue the following command from a DOS prompt:
 
telnet aa.bb.cc.dd 25
 
where aa.bb.cc.dd is the server's IP address. The telnet banner will usually indicate what application is listening on that port. Sometimes applications will take control of a port but will not output a banner. In that case, the telnet command will make a connection, but you will not see any banners.

Two applications cannot share the same IP/port combination. You need to configure both your mail software and SpamFilter so they each use a different IP address and port combination.

The “Settings -> Configuration ->Smtp listener socket” setting tells SpamFIlter what IP address to use to accept SMTP connections.

The “Settings -> Configuration ->Destination Server” tells SpamFilter what IP address and port where to forward the emails after they have been processed by SpamFilter.
