I don't know if this has been considered in the past, but it would be powerful to have SpamFilter be able to email alerts when certain events are taking place, for example exceeding max incoming connections.  I'm sure everyone can think of other events where it would be great to have SpamFilter email an alert so that timely actions can occur by support/operator personnel.

Matt,

This has been brought up and even privately, by me.  At this time, the word I get is that it is pending ... meaning, not out of the question but also may not happen.  I had actually asked about alerts for sudden, huge "exceptions" or other potential faults.  Of course, the obvious issue is that if the service is in trouble, it may not be able to email so you may get a false sense of security.

There are several things I do using my network monitors however.  One is I issue an SQL Query to get the number of quarantined items and if it falls outside the "normal" boundaries, either too high or too low, I get an alert.  I also attempt an SMTP connection.  If the banner does not return in a "timely" manner, I get an alert.   Things like that.

Points well taken.  We would never try to send email from the troubled system. We always set SMTP settings to use a different smtp server than the one in trouble for notifications.  This is how we have similar systems setup that do notifications.  Of course, SMTP settings should be configurable so the operator can deploy as preferred.
