I have a P4 2.26 with 512MB and XP Pro. Whenever I open any program I monitor my CPU Usage %. The second the program opens the CPU Usage % spikes between 90 and 100% and then goes back down to around 50 and then to 10 and down form there. This whole process of the rising and falling is done within 2 seconds. Even as I'm typing now its around 8-12%. Is this normal? Also how will I know if my fans in my computer are cooling the P4 enough?

Any suggestions?

Depending on what other types of applications you are running on your server the spikes sound about normal for the amount of RAM you have. As for the cooling issue, most of the better main board mfg's have monitoring software that will let you know this. Also if you have the CPU overheat alarm enabled in the main board bios it will sound when the cpu temp reaches a predetermined setting which you set.

I have a P4 2,26 w/512MB and XP pro. I would like to know how to find out if my P4 is in any way damaged - what are the signs?

 The reason I'm wondering is because my computer used to be ( about a month ago) LIGHTNING FAST and now its slowed down considerably. I've tried defragmenting, but what else can I do? I have an 80GB (74.5) hard drive and I've only used about 5GB - just regular programs - no big files (movies) or anything.

I'm going to install another stick of 512RAM to see if that fixes it. But is this something different or unrelated to RAM? If I have 1024MB of ram I hope this will solve everything.

Could it be a virus? I have Norton Antivirus and Personal Firewall installed and I download Live updates 2-3 times a week.

What else can I do? Any suggestions?

Check the CPU fan and all fans in the box.  One thing about Intel P4s is if they get hot they do not stop working they just get slower, unlike AMD chips which fry and die.
