I am running beta 147.  I know this has been brought up before, but I have not seen any thoughts on it for a while.  When SpamFilter is running (even as a console app) I get 15 sec. CPU spikes (pegged at 100%) exactly every 1 minute.  I have a very modest configuration; none of my list files have more than 5 or 10 entries.  I also have very low traffic.  This server only handles my personal email (approx. 10-20 messages / day).  Any thoughts?

Chad,

Can you please download the latest beta? Instead of running several task concurrently every minute (logfile saving, updating country stats, refreshing local black/white lists) we now spread them apart (logfiles every minute, country stats every 2 minutes, local files refresh every 3 minutes). This should help us pinpoint the problem depending on when you are now seing the spikes. This change may have been made in build .147, but we'll be certain if using .152

Ok, I have installed the newest beta and I am still seeing about the same spikes.

Here is a picture of my CPU graph over about 5 or 6 minutes.  For the first half, SpamFilter is open and running.  For the later half, I have closed SpamFilter.

Considering I did not receive any email during the time SpamFilter was open, that is an incredible amount of "background noise".  Considering I use this computer for several purposes, I just can't afford to have one application use this much CPU while "idle".  I am a programmer by day and I am honestly amazed that it takes this much CPU to read in properties files once a minute.  I just cannot understand this.

We're amazed as well as we've have not seen this behavior before...

As we mentioned in the previous msg, the following intervals are now being used:

dumping the logfile every minute
recalculating, country stats every 2 minutes
reloading config local files every 3 minutes

You have not mentioned what is the time interval between the spikes in the screenshot graph. Have you verified that it is the SpamFilter process that is consuming 100% of the CPU and not some other process that spikes when SpamFilter runs alongiside it?

If it is still peaking every 60 seconds, the main event that happens then is dumping the logfile to the hard drive. We have not had problems with antivirus software so far, but if you have one running, have you tried excluding the "logfile" directory from being scanned?

Ok, I think you pegged it.  It was my virus scan conflicting with SpamFilter.

Unfortunately, McAfee ActiveShield does not have an option to exclude individual folders, so unless their TechSupport can provide some insight, I guess I can only run one or the other.

Thanks,
