    Posted: 26 October 2006 at 9:48am
A very early beta of the new SpamFilter ISP Enterprise is now available to licensed users. We will likely open the beta program to everyone very soon as well. Please login your registered user area to access the download.

Major Changes introduced in SpamFilter ISP Enterprise v3.5 - The new SpamFilter ISP Enterprise v3.5 allows administrators to configure most filter settings individually for each domain being hosted. Most settings are now stored in a database, making it simpler for administrators to access them via custom web applications.

Technical notes - SpamFilter ISP Enterprise can be configured to run in "Standard" mode and in "Enterprise" mode. When configured for "Standard" mode, the functionality will be the same as in previous versions. When configured for "Enterprise" mode, the new functionality is activated. The Quarantine Database must be enabled and active for the Enterprise mode.

New Database functionality - In Enterprise mode, most settings are saved to the database. However, to avoid downtime if the database server is not available, all settings are automatically exported from the database to the file system. SpamFilter uses the files located on the file system to read all settings. SpamFilter will *not* read the database directly for its settings. SpamFilter will however continuously monitor the database, and if any settings stored in the database are changed, they are automatically saved to files and re-imported within seconds.

New Database Requirements - SpamFilter Enterprise only supports Microsoft SQL 7 or higher and MySQL v5 or higher. Support for MS Access and Oracle will not be added. The new database functionality relies heavily on the use of database triggers to ensure replication of database data to the file system. Triggers where added to MySQL starting from version 5, which explains the minimum requirement for this platform. SpamFilter will try to add the necessary tables, indexes and triggers automatically. If this procedure fails, please manually execute the MicrosoftSQL-Enterprise.sql and/or the MySql-Enterprise.sql update scripts found in the database directory.

New .ini settings structure - In both the Enterprise and the Standard modes, the SpamFilter.ini file has been greatly modified. Several of the settings in the SpamFilter.ini file can now be specified individually for each domain. For this reason, these settings have been moved to a new Filter.ini file. In Enterprise mode, each domain will have an associated Filter.ini file. All files relative to a domain are now stored in a subdirectory named after that domain. Special folder names are:
.\Domains\SFI - contains all settings for SpamFilter ISP in Standard mode
.\Domains\ ALL DOMAINS - contains all settings for domains in SpamFilter Enterprise that have not been customized.

Known Issues - The "Customized Domains" functionality in SpamFilter "Standard" mode is not functional at the moment. The Country blacklist is currently not working correctly.

Disclaimer - This version is a pre-release beta. As such, problems are expected. Using this version in a live production environment is not recommended.

Sweet, looks like it's time to crank up that development server again!

Top job guys!

Congratulations on this milestone!  I'm sure it will be expanding
Spam Filter ISP into a new level, able to scale out to compete
with some of the larger email server solutions.

You obviously built the system with the full awareness that the
quarantine database may not always be available to pull the
configuration details from.

Has this brought about any change in the way it handles email
that is scheduled to be quarantined?  I know currently if the
quarantine database is not available, it will just toss the
messages into a black hole.

It would be ideal if the database is not available, the messages
where held in que and placed in the quarantine when the database
was again available.

Any chance we will be seeing anything like this?

Well-needed future!

Also when using multiple servers and masterDB goes offline,

we cannot loose all the quarantined emails…

I was going to suggest that SF could quarantine to a localDB when masterDB is offline, but I guess a que folder would do the same.

(this way we don’t have to sync the localDB with masterDB when all online again, only need to release the que)

Where how do you want bugs / issues reported?

I've setup a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server (fresh install), MySQL 5.0, and the Ent. Beta to do testing.

Things are going OK so far for the most part but I do have some things to report so was wondering if you want them posted here or if email is better.

We agree on queuing the bad emails when the quarantine DB goes offline. We'll try to include the feature in one of the next betas. As SpamFilter ISP and SpamFilter Enterprise have the same code base, all features we add to Enterprise will also be available in the standard version (except features that deal with the new domain specific filtering options).

I've added a new thread for bug reports, that too is a good idea.

Roberto,

We use a slightly unconventional system here....we accept all mail into SF, tag the mail and send it to another server for more processing. We therefore do NOT use the quarantine database.

I have noticed in your earlier post that the quarantine DB must be active in order to use the "enterprise mode".

I cannot find a list of features that will be enabled in the enterprise mode, and therefore can't descide if it is worth taking a look at.

Please tell me that you are going to keep the Tag and forward facility as this is crucial to our setup.

Cheers.

P.S.

In it's current form, SF is one of the best filters out there !!!  Well done.

The new functionality is:

=============
configure most filter settings individually for each domain being hosted. Most settings are now stored in a database, making it simpler for administrators to access them via custom web applications
=============

So if for example you'll want to confugre "Tag and Deliver" for domain abc.com, but not for domain def.com, you will be able to do so. And yes, we'll keep this feature of course!

Excellent.

However, will I need to have your quarantine DB active in order to use these new features as suggested above?? (we don't use your quarantine DB)

uhm. good point. The answer right now is "yes", even though you can select the optino "Do not quarantine" for several filters.

StevenJohns, it would be worth your while to drop the quarantine retention setting down to 1 day to minimize harddisk usage if your not planning to use the quarantine feature.

M

We do quarantine the spam mails, we just don't use the SF quatrantine DB. Instead, we get SF to tag all mail and deliver it to a downstream smtp server where we do more processing.

I don't mind having SF use a database for all config stuff, in fact it would be much easier for us if it did, I was just concerned when I saw that having the quarantineDB was a requirement in order to get the extra features.

Yes, MySQL 5 is required as the previous versions do not support triggers. Please note that the "Access Denied" occurs because the MySQL account used also needs "SUPER" priviledge to create the triggers.

Before running the scripts and/or re-creating the tables, we suggest deleting all the SFE Enterprise tables first.

Rifleman,

The MySQL table creation is still a buggy process. If you're having trouble creating the tables with SpamFilter, we suggest running the SpamFilter\database\MySql-Enterprise.sql script directly within MySQL to see if it completes successfully (again after deleting the SpamFilter Enterprise Tables before running it).

Roberto,

Any plan for another beta release?  Can we see anything by November 26th?  That will be one month of testing with your first beta release.

I found another issue today with it (not sure if I posted it before or not)

When editing keywords on the blacklist, it seems most logical to hit the save setting button that is showing there.

It does not save the keywords file (not sure what it does on that screen actually).

If you want to save the keywords, you must click onto one of the other domains and it will then prompt you if you want to save the changes.

If I make changes, click Save Settings (logical), and then close, nothing is actually saved to the keyword file.

Thanks for all the reports. We won't be able to make it for Nov 26, but a new beta will definetly be released within a few weeks. There's several reports we're trying to address, and it's taking some time.

Dear Roberto,

Consider this suggestion in Enterprise version.

Instead of rejecting SPAM mails at Gateway level, that should be forwarded to some email ids belongs to that domain. So that domain admin can manage the entire mails (like bulk mail folder option in hotmail/yahoo etc.)

I like that idea as an option space2host.

Some of our customers would want to and some would not.

space2host, our customer's manage their rejected mail through the Quarantine web interface. Works great!

Sorry if I am not understanding you correctly and stating the obvious here. :-)

I was assuming that space2host's suggestion was in relation to the message types that are rejected without going to quarantine.

Yes, Without quarantine the mails just forwarded to related domain - specified email id. Result is lowest rate of false positives.

Just so I understand this correctly...

I just installed the free eval version a couple of days ago, and will be registering it once I have moved all 200 domains and verified that my server can handle the load (Windows 2000 Server, P4 3.0 Ghz, 1.0 Gb RAM).

Does this mean that the Enterprise version will be a free upgrade when the final version is released?

It would not be fair to have users with current software maintenance contracts having to pay extra for a new product line. The maintenance covers all upgrades and new versions. While it would be easy for us to "brand" a new version with a different name, we feel that would hurt the trust our users have in our product.

As you may have noticed, we try to keep very simple in all our processes. In this case, "simple" means that if your maintenance is current, you'll get all upgrades for free, including SpamFilter Enterprise. We try not to advertise this, as of course we'll loose money, but yes, if you purchase before SFE is released, the upgrade will be free.

Very cool.

So far (48 hours into it) I love it!  I will be registering shortly, once I have all the DNS migrated to my satisfaction.

Don't know if you caught the specs on my server, but just in case: it's a P4 3.0 ghz WITH 1.0 gB RAM running Windows 2000 Server.  I have about 200 domains and about 1000 users, and probably about 75,000 messages per day (just an estimate).  The machine also acts as a web server.  Do you see any issues with either the current version or the Enterprise version, when available?

Future plans are to purchase another box and split the mailserver and web server between the two, just in case...

Looking forward to the Enterprise version for the domain-specific settings.

Until last year our own production mail server was an old P3, 400MHz, 384MB RAM. We were receiving about 15,000-20,000 emails/day, with an average CPU load of 30%. We upgraded recently... but not for performance reasons!

I don't think your server will sweat that much with the traffic you estimate

Roberto,

I am wondering if you can further explain this:

.\Domains\ ALL DOMAINS - contains all settings for domains in SpamFilter Enterprise that have not been customized.

I've been working with a handful of domains, and keywords with the beta edition.

In most cases, I want the same keywords in the keyword file for every domain.  If V1AGra is on the list for one, I probably want it on the list for all.

Based on the description above, it sounds like if there is no keyword list defined for a domain then it will automatically use the keywords in the All Domains keyword file?

Also, for clarification what does the Use Defaults checkbox do?
