An observation - I looked at an earlier version of SpamFilter in January (v1.0.something) and was impressed with its simple user interface. I just downloaded 1.1.0.80 and set it up to give it another try and noticed right away that it has gotten a lot more complex, albeit more powerful. I hope it doesn't get too feature-plagued. The more knobs you have, the harder it is to get the UI right. At some point added features become a detriment. My $.02

Phil, It's not easy to find a balance..! Of course the more features there are, the more powerful it becomes, and will fit the needs of more users. But yes, if it's too complex, there are more points of failure. When we add new features, we try to have them with default settings that make it behave as if the feature was not there. For example the custimized responses are defaulted with the values that were previously hard coded. The quarantine option defaults to being disabled. All new black/white lists default to empty. We are trying hard to keep things simple but yet flexible. We have learned that many users share needs that we did not think about. Sometimes having this little extra feature or not is what makes a sys admin decide if a product will fit into his environment or not. And having that little feature off by default usuaally will not hurt the users who do not need it. Roberto Franceschetti |
