"tarpitting' would be a cool feature. Where Spamfilter would automatically add email addresses to a "senders email block list" if mail was sent to a user specified email address, a tarpit address. I have seen spammers pound my server with variations of bogus usernames for each one of our domains trying to find valid email addresses. In addition if one could sense the spammers pounding the non-existant email addresses to find your email users (as above) and record them for blocking as well ... I am sensitive to feature creep ... but just throwing out my 2 cents .... Your Spam filter is working great now. I am the hostmaster for an ISP and used to have at least 200 spams a day -- now I have about 14. Thanks guys! Dwight Cook

Tarpitting is a good idea. We won't be able to add it in time for the next build, but I've added to the wish list. It's rather easy to implement, so we'll have that ready very soon. Blocking FROMs that send out emails to non-existing users is a bit harder. SpamFilter does not know if a user exists on your destination smtp server... If an email passes all the filter rules, it is forwarded to the destination smtp server, which in turn can reject the email for a variety of reasons. Mailbox full, mailbox does not exist, server is unavailable. Trapping the specific "mailbox does not exist" is not alway 100% reliable, and we would not want to blacklist legitimate senders if possible... Roberto Franceschetti |
