Hi

I've installed ver 2.6.3.473 on a Windows 2003 SP1 with the Multilingual User Interface (English and Chinese Simplified). I did the installation via remote console (RDP). The application runs fine in GUI mode, it created the service, but when trying to start it as service (both from GUI and from services manager) the application hangs and crashes. I tried a previous version before upgrading to 2.6.3.473 with the same result.
I would appreciate any clues on this matter.

croitoru,

There are very small differences between the console version (SpamFilter.exe) and the service version (SpamFilterSvc.exe). So far, we've never seen a case where one version works and the other doesn't due to an application error.

The most common problem however when starting SpamFilter is that the IP/port it uses to listen for traffic is in use by another application (by default SpamFilter uses port 25 on all IPs bound to the NIC card). For example, if you start the SpamFilter standalone GUI, and then start the SpamFilter service without closing the standalone GUI first, you'll end up in having both applications trying to listen on port 25, and that will cause a problem with the second application that is started.

Hi

Thank you for your answer. I've been using SPAMFilter for over two years, on several servers and several configurations. This situation is no different. I am running SPAMfilter on 3 other W2K SP1 servers, one with Exchange 2003 and the other with built in SMTP service. The only difference is that this is running MUI.

I am open to any suggestions or testing strategies. As I said, works fine as stand alone exe, but when trying to start the service it crashes...

Well, in this case we have our first case! :-)

For starters, can you please try using the latest version, build 2.6.3.487 as it does contain some code improvements and extra error handling routins? If that also crashes, could you tell us in more details what the symptoms are? For example (just a sample of the detail we're looking for):
you start the service, the GUI appears (or not) for a second, then an error box pops up with this content (bla bla bla). The Windows event log shows this error (bla bla bla).
A copy of SpamFilter's activity logfile will also help (if any entries are generated right after starting the service).

Hi

Thanks again for the message - but I've managed to sort it out.
I had to turn off DEP (the Windows 2003 Buffer Overflow/ Data Execution Prevention feature) for SPAMFilter.

New tricks for old players...

Regards,

Radu

I've selectively turned off DEP for the SPAMFilter. I am not using the built in scanning engine (are you?). Google search revealed this:
http://www.messagingsolutions.com/Norman.htm
Do you have that installed? Try turning the built in scan off. You might have to add the engine separately to DEP.

Regards,

Radu

I went to link Radu but I don't have anything install from Norman website, only original setup that I copy from NT to W2003 which work just fine on NT.

Was to late yesterday night to continue so I try to play with AV more today.

Thx…Johan

Johan,

Could you please try to:

Stop SpamFilter.
Delete the SpamFilter\nse and SpamFilter\nvc directories.
In the registry, delete the key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Norman Data Defense Systems]
Reinstall the antivirus plugin, ensuring that you select SpamFilter's directory as the default install directory.
Start SpamFilter
