Hi

I am interested to buy this software and just trying it at the moment.

I have some start problems and i hope someone can give me some help.

My problem is HOWTO configure under the "Configuration" tab

I will explain how my system is setup and then hopefully someone can help me out here :)

I have a Router with a WAN ip 82.xxx.xxx.xxx

Behind the router I have a windows 2003 Server. The Domain name is Domain.domain.local and it has IP 192.168.2.15

All trafic on port 80 and 25 is forwared from WAN ip to this Server.

I have sat up Imail 8.22 with "no relay" and its working at the moment listening on port 25

Out from this I am trying to configure the antispam before my Imail program

Question 1:

SMTP Listener socket: I belive Smap Filter should now listen on port 25. Under FQND what do I write there. Can i write IP address?

Question 2

Destination Server.I will change Imail listening port to 125

Under server name.what do I write. its on the same physical PC.should i write the Internal ip like 192.168.2.15 here?

Question 3

Enter your DNS Server.I have a DNS Server installed on mail server but that is only used on local lan and basicly only function is to forward any request to ntlworlds DNS Server.Do i write my own local that again is same pc 192.168.2.15 or can I write any ISP providers DNS

When Config is done then I have a last question:

In outlook my users has to click "use SMTP AUthentication" I can not find that here. Do i have to consider that or will that authentication just bypass the Spam filter and still be authenticated on Imail?

Hope you can help me on track:)

Kind Regards

Morten

I will help you where I can.

Question 1 - Yes, the spamfilter should be listening on port 25.  Imail should be listening on another port.  The FQDN is that of the spamfilter (probably the same as your MX)

Question 2 - yes, internal IP is fine, just be sure to set the port to the 125 (or whatever your IMail SMTP is listening on)

Question 3 - You want a fast DNS server, so if yours just forwards on, then I would use a DNS server of your ISP.  You can use more than 1 (I would) - seperate them with a comma ","

You last question about ourgoing smtp - Spamfilter is used only for inbound mail.  It is not a "smart host" or mail relay for external domains.  You will need to point your outlook clients outbound server setting to either the IMAIL server, an internal mail relay, or an ISP smarthost.

Hope that helps

Morten,

Jeremy is correct on everything (thanks for the help Jeremy!), however Ill have to correct the last answer and provide you "happier" news :-)

We introduced SMTP Authentication support in SpamFilter a couple of years ago.  SpamFilter supports LDAP, Active Directory (natively, not in LDAP-emulation mode...), and Unix-style password files. SSL encryption is also supported.

You can find the SMTP AUTH settings easily by looking at the screenshot:
www.logsat.com/sfi-spam-filter-screenshots/sfi-smtp-authentication.asp

Once a client authenticates via SMTP AUTH, they will be able to use SpamFilter for their outgoing mail server in the email client authentication.

A big thanks to the two of you :)
I will work on this in the weekend and come back to you.prob with more questions.lol

That authentication over LDAP that is SMTP Authentication: Happy the option are there but will first get the rest to work.as a starter I want the Antispam to Filter away the spam that hits the users inbox. Taking a step at the time but will defenetly want the SMTP Authentication set up when every thing else is working.

If that is the case, is it correct that in outlook i configure POP3 as normal and SMTP i can still configure just using port 125 instead of 25 so it gets authenticated from Imail. For this to work i just have to open port 125 in my firewall. Is this correct understood

Sorry for basic question. I am new to this post systems.First one I ever have setup

Kind Regards

Hi. OK I am back testing this now and still running into some problems.

I run Imail 8.22 on win 2003 Server using "SMTP authentication"

Before I installed filter i have installed IMail. Its listening on port 25 and using "SMTP AUthentication". SMTP using "No Mail Relay"
With this settings I can Send and Resieve and working very well.

Now I install the Smam Filter and set the setting as pr Screen short
The IP i am using is the internal Ip address and Router is forwarding trafic on port 25 and 125 to this server. Not sure if this is correct setup?
As smap filter now is listening to port 25 i have changed SMTP in Imail to listen to port 125.
I have only chaged the settings in the Imail program itself. Hope that is the only place.
Windows own SMTP is not running.
When I now try to send to any address that is hosted like morten@campusafrica.org (I have put campusafrica.org on my white list) i get it return saying that mail could not deliver. I must have a problem with setup as it works before i chage port numbers and install spam filter. I will attach log file. It does say conflicting on IP and Port 25. I do not understand that as my Imail program is using port 125.

ANy idears how to resolve this ?

Kind Regards
Morten
