If I log on to the machine running the spam filter, I cannot see the system tray icon. The only way I can open it is in standalone mode, but this doesn't show any real time data. Any ideas on how to open it manually?

Running SpamFilter's service, and then also opening another instance of the "Standalone" SpamFilter application is going to cause problems. If you are running two instances of SpamFilter, both installed in the same directory, this is bound to cause issues as they are both accessing the same resources, and when you're terminating the standalone application this may cause the service application to become unresponsive. I'm including a section of our manual, which explains how SpamFilter can be executed: SpamFilter Service / Console Application SpamFilter can run in two different ways.
If SpamFilter is already running as a service, subsequently running the standalone application (SpamFilter.exe) will open a new instance of SpamFilter, it will not be the GUI for the service. This will most likely create a conflict, as two applications cannot bind to the same port on a server. Please note that the SpamFilter service does show display a GUI (launched from an icon in the tray bar), but if you are accessing a Windows 2000 server remotely using Terminal Services will not be able to display the GUI. This is because Terminal Services in Windows 2000 is not able to display the server's physical console. Looking at the physical server's screen, or using a product like PCAnywhere, DameWare, VNC etc that displays the actual screen will reveal the console. Microsoft fixed this limitation in Windows 2003. In this version of the operating system, Terminal Services allows RDP clients to connect to the server's console. Some Terminal Services clients have a checkbox in their settings that forces them to connect to the console. In the Remote Desktop client that ships with Windows XP, Microsoft (in)conveniently decided to not make this checkbox available. In this case, to view the server's physical console, you'll need to invoke Remote Desktop from the command line as follows: mstsc /console Please note that some newer versions of the Terminal Services client and in Microsoft Vista, the command is: mstsc /admin Edited by LogSat - 23 October 2009 at 4:17pm |

Be aware that if you upgraded to XP SP3 then you need to replace /console with /admin to be able to see spamfilter in the tray area.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstsc.exe /v:xxxxxxxxxxxxxx /admin

Hi guys
I was aware of the limitation with remote desktop, but even when on the console or VNC'd into the machine, there is still no system tray icon. It's possible that the standalone version was opened and closed - could this have made the system tray icon disappear on the console? But even if I restart the service, the icon doesn't return. I guess what I'm asking is can it be opened some other way aside from double clicking the icon in the system tray? |

If the standalone version is opened while the service is running, this could in theory cause the service to crash. If you can't see the tray icon, nor a minimized window near the task bar, can you check the Task Manager to see if there is a SpamFilterSvc.exe service running? If this executable is running, then the service is running and an icon or a system tray icon should be visible when viewed by VNC (or remote desktop connected to the console)

Hi I have restarted the server and connected with VNC. I can confirm: Standalone spamfilter has not been opened SpamFilterSvc.exe is a running process There is no icon in the system tray. Any ideas? The reason why I want to have a look at it is because occasionally the spam filter stops accepting mail. Our firewall is showing that it is allowing connections through to the spam filter however, SMTP connections are not being made. A copy of the logs are below - as you can see, there doesn't seem to be any errors. The last email was received and then no other connections are made. When attempting to restart the service, it seems to hang. The only way to get mail flowing again is to restart the whole server.
