Hi
We have some customer using our mail server who starts to get their mails rejected because they are blocked by http://www.barracudacentral.org/

I have checked our spamfilter and I can not see that we are asking all mails to be checked by them so I cant understand that our mail server is causing this

The customer get a message:
> Body of message generated response:
> 554 Service unavailable; Client host [ip0x1a1e89.bip.mvb.dk] blocked using Barracuda Reputation; http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=80.198.234.178
<http://bbl.barracudacentral.com/q.cgi?ip=80.198.234.178>

This is not the IP of our mail server but the IP of the person sending the mail.
Can you out from this see if this is something that our ISP Spamfilter is blocking?

I have read alot about barracudacentra.com and it seems to be spam in itself.

My Questions are:
Can it be our Spamfilter that rejects the mails because its blacklisted in Barracudacentral?

If not is the barracudacentra.com just spam in itself?

Kind Regards
Morten

Morten,

Without seeing your customer's email it's not possible to determine what is happening. If that IP is not the one for your own server, then Barracuda is possibly looking inside the email sent by your user, and looking up the URLs it contains in the email's hyperlink against their own blacklists. If it's a false positive (meaning the email is not spam), then this would just be an example of an email incorrectly blocked by Barracuda. Even SpamFilter will occasionally incorrectly block valid emails by thinking they're spam, so we can't fault Barracuda for doing the same Smile.

Roberto, maybe you want to grant some extra permissions to some of your more regular visitors to mark this type of stuff as offline.  Spam everywhere!

Spamfilter may not be using Barracuda,  but we recently added their blacklist to our spamfilter setup, and have had awesome results.

It is free to use as long as you signup with them.

Catching much more than our other DNS BL's - and quickly moved it to the top of our list.

After reading this post, I thought I would try it on some domains also (not all domains just yet).

In the last week, on one test domain I had 9 messages stopped as a result of MAPS servers and only two were the result of the barracuda.  Here are the ones I am using:

bl.spamcop.net, true
cbl.abuseat.org, true
combined.njabl.org, true
dnsbl.sorbs.net, true
zen.spamhaus.org, true
b.barracudacentral.org, true

Does the RBL list get checked top to bottom?

Also, what setting do you use for MIN Maps servers needed for reject?

You have a few I don't so I need to check them out. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks!

Yes, the list is checked from top to bottom, and the test is stopped as soon as the minimum number of matches is met. This means the the "bottom" servers will usually be checked less frequently than the top ones.
