I'm a new administrator for a company who uses SpamFilter ISP and am also new to SpamFilter ISP product.  I've noticed we're currently running version 4.1.2.812 and the latest version is 4.2.8.848.

My question is concerning the upgrade process.  Can the product be upgraded without losing any settings or do I have to completely reconfigure the product?  Does an upgrade require a server reboot?  Basically, what is the process?

Thanks.

DBlackerby,

To upgrade SpamFilter, you can simply download the “binaries” only package after logging into our website to your registered user area, extract the two executables SpamFilter.exe and SpamFilterSvc.exe in the SpamFilter directory overwriting the old ones, and restart SpamFilter. 99.9% of our upgrades can be performed this way. Sometimes we may include additional files in the zip, especially the database containing the IP-to-Country database - simply copy those as well if present.

If you wish, you can also upgrade using the “usual” setup.exe installer, which essentially will do the same thing (upgrade the executables and leaving all the config files intact). However, if you’re like most admins, you will prefer to have total control of your upgrades, thus our first method will probably be your preference :-)

Roberto,

Thanks for your reply.  It helps a great deal.

Also, there are apparently a lot of spam emails making their way through the filter.  Is an upgrade something that would address those items or is there something else I need to look at?

Thanks.

There are no major changes in the filtering between v4.1 and v4.2, so it is unlikely the upgrade will help you in that regard. If you'd like to zip and email us at support at logsat dot com one of your latest SpamFilter's activity logfiles for a day however, we'll be glad to look over it to ensure the various major filters are working as they should. If the zip file is over 8MB in size, please send it to us via FTP. I'll send you our FTP login info via a separate PM.
