We are using v1.1.2.124 and having a problem changing settings. We originally setup spamfilter as a higher priority mx record (value 0), but after a week some spammers were either using the lower priority mx record (value 10) or were still using cached entries. Our next step was to remove the non spamfilter server from DNS and change the smtp port to 17. After verifying that the mailserver was working on port 17 we changed our local domains line in spamfilter to be the following: idp.net:mail.idp.net:17 We saved the settings but it was not passing mail, so we then restarted the spamfilter service and the activity log showed that it was trying to clear the queue. It sat like that not processing any mail for 15 minutes. We rebooted the spamfilter server and then it processed fine. Do you know of any reason we might be experiencing this behavior? A few days later we followed the same process for another of our domains and experienced the same problem. The default mail server was mail.idp.net port 25, which we now changed to port 17. We did not have any lines in local domains with a specified mailserver and port, though.

Michael,

There seem to be 2 separate issues, if we understood the email correctly.

1) changing an entry in the  "local domains" by adding a redirect to it(idp.net:mail.idp.net:17 ) caused email to not be passed to the dest server

2) changing the destination port in the "Destination Server" also caused email to not being delivered to the dest server

Unfortunately we tried and retried, but were not able to duplicate the problem. It not working after restarting the SpamFilter service also does not make sense. If the service shuts down, there are no other "strange" things going on in the background as in other applications... Unless the SpamFilterSvc.exe process crashed while shutting it down (if it crashes you'll see it still present in the Task Manager), it's completely out gone from memory, no other DLLs are loaded.

If you can duplicate this, note at what time you make the change, and email us the activity log for around that time, we'll try to see if there is anything in the logsd that can clue us in.

I can clarify for you.  I work with Mike.  ANY configuration changes are not being realized by SpamFilter for some reason.  If we make a change to whitelisted domains for redirection or if we add an IP address to our blacklist the change is not recognized by SpamFilter until we reboot.  If we try to stop the service it hangs and Windows returns an error saying that it could not stop the service.

I think the two main issues we are experiencing can be summarized by

1. Changes to Settings not being read in by SpamFilter and

2. An inability to stop and restart the service, ever.

We are running latest release version of SpamFilter (I think Mike originally installed the latest demo version and then when we bought it he installed the latest registered version on top if that helps)  on a Pentium III 1 GHz, Intel Chipset system with 512MB RAM, Windows 2000 SP3 plus latest hotfixes.

Of course, we are very happy to hear that you do not have the symptom.  Not having the source code we are at a disadvantage on how to trouble shoot this.

Please help.

-Matt

Well, we have solid information now that the re-starting of the service problem was due to the GUI running on the Console.  Restarting the services from an RDP session with no one logged onto the console allows us to restart the services, no problem.
